Submillimetre Wave Instrumentation

The Astrophysics Group is actively involved in the development of detectors, receivers and techniques for astronomy at mm and submm wavelengths, that is the krange from 100GHz to 1THz and beyond. This work involves a number of activities ranging from the engineering of large, high-precision antennas through to the development of sub-micron superconducting detectors. Recent projects include the 16-detector 350GHz HARP-B receiver for the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii, and the development of 183GHz water vapour radiometers for ALMA.
