John Young

I work as a Senior Research Associate in the Cavendish Astrophysics Group at the University of Cambridge.

My research interests and activities include:

• The scientific exploitation of high angular resolution techniques in stellar astrophysics, in particular:
  • Surface asymmetries on evolved stars
  • Stellar pulsation and mass loss
  • Fundamental parameters of stars
• Design and commissioning of the Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer
• Data processing/analysis in optical interferometry and aperture masking:
  • OIFITS: Data Exchange Standard for Optical Interferometry
  • mfit: optical interferometry model-fitting software
• Instrumentation for optical and infrared stellar interferometers:
  • My PhD thesis (1999) was concerned with the development and use of an IR camera for COAST
• Real-time control systems
• Site testing for optical interferometry
